Whitening strips
have received a lot of publicity over the last several
years. This page gives you an analysis of how they
work, their effectiveness, and the advantages and
drawbacks to this teeth whitening product.
Description
A thin strip containing hydrogen peroxide (in most
cases) is applied to the teeth. The strip is then
left on the teeth long enough for the whitening agent to
do its job.
How it works
The hydrogen peroxide in the strip penetrates tooth
enamel and oxidizes the particles between teeth that
causes discoloration. This makes the particles
turn white, thereby whitening the appearance of teeth.
Effectiveness
Whitening strips do not appear to be that effective
in whitening teeth the way most people want. They
are capable of whitening the parts of the tooth they
come into contact with a shade or two. Overall
though, more effective treatments are available.
Advantages/Disadvantages
The advantages of whitening strips is that they can
be used quickly and are readily available. Other
than that, they just do not compare to other, more
effective teeth whitening options such as
at home
kits or a dental visit.
Whitening strips make it difficult to whiten in the
grooves of teeth. They are also a little pricey
and can be difficult to use. Another drawback is
the fact that many users have complained of severe
sensitivity in their teeth during and immediately after
use. This is probably caused by the glycerin in
the strips that is used to draw water out of the tooth.
General Instructions
As with all teeth whitening products, be certain to
follow the instructions on the box. Basically, you
prepare your teeth for the strips and then apply the
product. It is pretty straightforward.
Summary
Teeth whitening strips are probably our least
favorite method/product of whitening teeth.
Although some people have reported moderate success with
them, most are left disappointed. We would opt
instead for another, more effective teeth whitening
product.
